The County encompasses approximately 994 square miles in the middle of the 400-mile long Central Valley, which is California's prime agricultural region. The state Capitol is located within the County.   The County is west of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and east of San Francisco Bay.  The County has seven incorporated cities: Sacramento (County Seat), Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Folsom, Galt, and Isleton.

The County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors. Each is elected from one of the five supervisorial districts of the County for a four year term.   Other elected officials include the Assessor, District Attorney and Sheriff.   The County Executive runs the day to day operations of the County. The County's budget is $3.5 billion.
