ASCI is a nonprofit organization established in 1994 that focuses on kinship care, offering a safe and nurturing environment for children placed with relatives or close family friends. It is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and is the largest provider of kinship support services in Allegheny County, with contracts extending to several neighboring counties and a large office in Philadelphia County operating in collaboration with the Department of Human Services. ASCI frames kinship care as a culturally competent practice rooted in African-American traditions, while applying this approach broadly to address placement disparities related to race and ethnicity. Since its inception, the organization has served more than 27,000 children, around 9,600 kinship caregivers, and 30,000 birth parents, with a 2019 census indicating it serves roughly 1,800 children and kinship triads daily. In October 2021, ASCI announced the launch of a Driver Simulation Program to provide young drivers with driving experience while prioritizing safety.
