The Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) at Paul Smith’s College protects Adirondack waters and promotes healthy watersheds through science, stewardship, and education. Our team of scientists, stewards, educators, advocates, and artists partners with local communities and lake associations to conserve habitat and support thriving ecosystems and communities across the Adirondacks.

AWI operates the only state-certified environmental laboratory in the Adirondack Park and stewards the region’s largest long-term water quality dataset, built over 30 years across more than 80 lakes. This foundation of trusted science helps communities and policymakers detect early warning signs and protect Adirondack waters before ecological tipping points are reached.

AWI provides a wide range of services, including aquatic invasive species management, water quality monitoring, recreational use and ecological studies, public education programs, and scientific publications. In partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), AWI runs a region-wide boat inspection program that prevents the spread of aquatic invasive species. We support community initiatives that connect people to the waters we love - including Adirondack Water Week, Love Your Lakes, Wool and Water, and others - fostering greater stewardship across the region. We also create meaningful jobs and hands-on research opportunities for both college students and community members, helping train the next generation of environmental leaders. In addition, we work with policymakers and decisionmakers across the Adirondacks and New York State to ensure our research informs sound, data-driven policy on issues such as road salt, harmful algal blooms, water quality, climate change, and watershed integrity.
