ALERRT is a public-safety training center based at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. It was created in 2002 through a partnership with the university, the San Marcos Police Department, and the Hays County Sheriff’s Office to address the need for active shooter response training for first responders. The center trains law enforcement and other first responders in active shooter response and has trained more than 300,000 first responders across the United States. In 2013, ALERRT was designated the National Standard in Active Shooter Response Training by the FBI. The organization collaborates with regional law-enforcement bodies and associations to develop training programs, including efforts with the Texas Police Chiefs Association and the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas to create mandatory police-chief training in Texas. Its work targets public-safety agencies seeking standardized response protocols for active shooter incidents nationwide.
