The organization is a Birmingham-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1966 and affiliated with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a national network of nearly 4,000 clubs that serves around four million children and teens. It operates two club locations, near West End at the Dr. Kirkwood R. Balton Unit and in Bessemer's Southside Homes community, serving more than 1,000 children annually aged 6 to 18. Programs cover health and nutrition, character and leadership development, education and career preparation, art, music, sports and recreation, provided in a safe, supervised setting. Participation requires a modest annual fee of $8 per child, while the organization bears roughly $1,000 per child per year in costs. The clubs are open after school during the academic year and operate all day during Spring Break and the summer months. In November 2021, the organization announced the departure of its chief executive officer, marking a leadership transition.
