The Agence Française de Développement (AFD) is a public development institution based in Paris, Île-de-France, that has operated for seven decades to reduce poverty and advance development in the Global South and in French overseas territories. It implements policies defined by the French government and maintains a global footprint with around 70 agencies and representation offices across four continents, including nine overseas territories and an office in Brussels. AFD supports a broad range of projects intended to improve living conditions, foster economic growth, and protect the environment, covering education, health, agricultural and small-business support, water access, forest conservation, and climate action. Its work targets governments and development partners, leveraging its international network to address essential services and resilience challenges in its client markets. 

In June 2026, AFD announced a collaboration in Mayotte to protect the lagoon and restore coastal ecosystems, illustrating ongoing partnerships beyond Europe.
