AgriProtein is a biotechnology research company based in Los Angeles, California, focused on nutrient upcycling to close the loop in food production. It uses the larvae of the black soldier fly to convert organic waste from food factories, supermarkets, farms, and restaurants into products for pets, livestock, and fish, including MagMeal (an insect-based complete protein), MagOil (a natural oil), and MagSoil (a soil conditioner). The company has been developing its technology since 2008 and opened the world’s first industrial-scale insect facility in Cape Town in 2016, capable of diverting up to 100 tonnes of organic waste per day and producing over 2,000 tonnes of MagMeal per year. AgriProtein operates as a subsidiary of the Insect Technology Group and in 2019 opened a Singapore-based R&D centre and global PMO as part of its regional expansion; it has engaged in partnerships such as with PreZero. The company has received industry recognition, being named a Global Cleantech 100 company in 2020 and listed among Time Magazine’s 50 Genius Companies in 2018.
