AIR Studios is a London-based recording facility established in 1969 when George Martin left EMI to create an independent complex in central London. Over the years it grew into a globally recognized studio operation for musicians, culminating in a Lyndhurst Hall facility in Hampstead that opened in December 1992. Lyndhurst Hall is a Grade II* listed building, originally designed as a church and missionary school in 1880 by the Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse. Historically, AIR Studios also built a sister studio on Montserrat in the mid-1970s, which closed after Hurricane Hugo struck in 1989. More recently, AIR Studios expanded into mastering by acquiring Alchemy Mastering and launching a dedicated mastering unit in 2020, with Nikki Affleck appointed head of mastering in 2021.
