Akbank is a Turkish banking company headquartered in Levent, Istanbul, with more than 10,000 employees. It was founded in January 1948 in Adana to fund local cotton producers, opened its first Istanbul branch in 1950, relocated its head office to Istanbul in 1954, and automated all banking operations by 1963. The bank was floated to the public in 1990 and began trading on international markets via an American Depository Receipt after its 1998 secondary offering. Akbank expanded into securities, asset management, and private banking, establishing AKSecurities in 1996, AKInvestment Trust in 1998, AKAssetManagement and its Private Banking Department in 2000, and Ak Pension Company in 2003; it acquired AKLease in 2005 and Ak Pension Company was sold to Ak Insurance in 2006. It operates overseas through subsidiaries in Germany (Akbank AG), the Netherlands (Akbank NV) and Dubai (Akbank Dubai Limited) and maintains a Malta branch, with Akbank AG and Akbank NV undergoing consolidation under Akbank AG and the merger is underway. Its core banking activities cover consumer, commercial and SME, corporate and private banking services as well as foreign trade financing.
