Al-Hidaya Center operates as a religious institution and community hub for the Muslim Community of Troy, a non-profit entity associated with the center. The community began with students from the RPI Muslim Student Association who rented a room for daily prayers in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1986 they purchased a two-story house, converting the first floor into a masjid and the second floor into classrooms for a weekend school, youth and adult education, and other activities. As membership grew, space constraints led to major events being hosted at the RPI campus and spurred the effort to build Masjid Al-Hidaya in Latham; the first phase was completed in 2015, with two additional expansions planned. Based in the Albany area of New York's capital district, the organization serves thousands of Muslims and can accommodate more than 1,200 attendees for jummah prayers. It operates as a small- to mid-sized religious institution in the region, providing worship space alongside educational programs.
