We provide rental subsidies and manage affordable Public Housing units for low income families, seniors, and persons with disabilities throughout Alachua County, Florida.  The Alachua County Housing Authority was founded in 1967.  The first 200 Public Housing units were built in 1971 and the remaining built in 1985.  The Authority received its first Section 8 Vouchers in 1976.

In 1979, the Authority moved its office into the Historic Duck Pound Community at 636 NE 1st Street, Gainesville, FL and subsequently moved to 240 SW 1st Street, Gainesville, FL.  To accommodate the new court house the Authority moved back to the Duck Pond area to its current location in the Historic DaCosta House located at 703 N.E. 1st Street, Gainesville, FL, Alachua County.

The  City of Gainesville, Florida has a population of approximately 124,354  and has been ranked among the top places to live and play over the past several years. The City of Gainesville is home to the University of Florida Gators.  The city is also known for its low cost of living, but consequently suffers from a weak job market.  Gainesville also has an active arts, cultural, and musical community, hosting major festivals and concerts every year. Gainesville was given the title as the “healthiest city in America” because it received the only Gold Well City award by the Wellness Councils of America.

Housing Authority Board is charged with maintaining the policy and fiduciary responsibilities pertaining to the Housing Authority. The Alachua County Housing Authority is an independent legal entity created by State Statute.  By Special Act of the Florida State Legislature in 1972, Housing Authority Board members are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners.
