The Alberta Utilities Commission is an independent, quasi-judicial agency established by the Government of Alberta to oversee the province’s utility service delivery. It regulates investor-owned natural gas, electric, and water utilities, as well as certain municipally owned electric utilities, to help ensure customers receive safe, reliable service at just and reasonable rates. The commission also oversees the construction, operation, and decommissioning of electric facilities in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner and provides regulatory oversight of the wholesale electricity market and the retail gas and electricity markets in Alberta. Decisions are reached through written and oral proceedings, with participation from representative groups encouraged to reflect public interests.

Based in Calgary, Alberta, the AUC describes itself as a regulatory body serving a mid-sized workforce and handles customer inquiries and complaints through its staff. In 2023, the Commission launched Module B to review the impact of increasing renewable generation on the generation mix and system reliability.
