The Altadena Library District is an independent special district serving the unincorporated area of Altadena in Los Angeles County, California, formed in 1926 and governed by a locally elected Board of Library Trustees. It operates as a locally controlled library system funded by property taxes, and it became independent in 1955, taking responsibility for its own buildings, collections, and services. The Main Library at 600 East Mariposa Street is a 25,000-square-foot facility built in 1967 in a park-like setting, designed by Boyd Georgi. The Bob Lucas Memorial Branch Library on Lincoln Avenue, established in 1957, houses the district’s Literacy Services. The district serves about 55,230 residents in roughly 8 square miles, and in February 2026 it celebrated a groundbreaking for renovations to the Main Library building.
