Alteco Medical AB from Lund, Sweden is an ISO 13485-certified medical device company founded in 2002. Our product the Alteco LPS Adsorber removes endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) from the patient’s bloodstream. The Alteco LPS Adsorber uses a unique blood purification technology, applied as an add-on therapy in sepsis to treat endotoxemia (high levels of endotoxin). This can help stabilize the patient in the acute situation when standard medical treatment is insufficient.
Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening inflammatory response to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, amputations and death. It is one of the most common causes of death in modern intensive care, and with nearly 49 million cases and 11 million deaths per year - or 1 in 5 - it is now thought that sepsis kills more people than cancer. Endotoxin is the toxic part of gram-negative bacteria, but endotoxemia is often present in sepsis patients regardless of the type of infection.
The Alteco LPS Adsorber, available on the market since 2007, breaks the chain of immune system overreactions by removing endotoxin from the patient’s bloodstream during extracorporeal treatment. The product is a class IIa medical device, using a synthetic peptide to safely adsorb circulating endotoxin and help stabilize the patient’s hemodynamic
parameters.
