Alternative Tentacles is an independent record label based in Emeryville, California, owned by Jello Biafra. Founded in 1979 to release the Dead Kennedys' California Uber Alles, it is among the oldest surviving punk labels in the United States. Over the years, the label has broadened its catalog to include spoken word releases by figures such as Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, and Arundhati Roy, and it expanded into theatrical DVDs in 2010 alongside music releases. The organization serves fans of punk and independent music and audiences for political and documentary content by producing and promoting material and by handling manufacturing for its artists. Based in Emeryville, it remains a long-standing independent presence within the US punk and alternative music landscape. A recent development is the addition of Seattle-based SANDRIDER to the roster, with a debut Aviary/Baleen 7-inch releasing.
