The American Academy in Rome is a nonprofit organization that supports artists, writers, and scholars by cultivating an international, collaborative community. It administers the Rome Prize and Italian Fellowships each spring through a competitive, juried selection process that begins the previous fall, inviting recipients to Rome to develop their work. The residence in Rome is designed to foster intellectual and artistic freedom as well as cross-disciplinary exchange among participants. With origins dating to 1894, the Academy has maintained a link to Rome's rich cultural legacy while expanding its community to include prize fellows, invited residents, visiting artists and scholars, and participants in its summer programs. It is based in New York City, New York, and in recent years has broadened its network through partnerships such as a Johns Hopkins University residency agreement and collaborations with the Alastair Swayn Foundation and RMIT Architecture for affiliated fellowships.
