The American Association of Geographers (AAG) is a non-profit professional and scholarly organization that represents geography educators, researchers, and practitioners. Founded in 1904 as a scientific and educational society, it gathers members with interests in the theory, methods, practice, and education of geography. Based in Washington, District of Columbia, the association acts as a central hub for the geography community, supporting scholarship, professional development, and collaboration. The AAG maintains a mid-sized staff and operates within the non-profit sector to advance the discipline through programs that recognize excellence and foster leadership. Its activities include honors and fellowships as well as initiatives like Elevate the Discipline, launched in 2023 to promote geographers in media, policy, and public discourse. In 2026, the organization appointed Maria Lane as dean of Graduate Studies, and she was named a fellow of the AAG, illustrating ongoing leadership development.
