American Ballet Theatre (ABT) is a prominent American performing arts company with a history dating to 1940. It maintains a diverse repertoire of full-length classical ballets and contemporary one-act works, staging seasons in New York—summer at the Metropolitan Opera House and fall at the Koch Theater—while also touring the United States and abroad to audiences in hundreds of cities. In 2006, Congress designated ABT as America’s National Ballet Company, highlighting its national reach and cultural significance.

The organization pursues both preservation and innovation, sustaining a broad repertoire and commissioning new works from leading choreographers, while operating an education program that includes the ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, Summer Intensive programs, and the National Training Curriculum for dance educators. Based in the United States and active in the performing arts sector, ABT connects American roots with major stages worldwide through its performances and outreach. In 2025 ABT partnered with the Misty Copeland Foundation to present Misty Copeland’s farewell via a live simulcast at Alice Tully Hall, reflecting ongoing collaborations beyond traditional performances.
