The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) is a nonprofit private organization and one of the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Founded in 1969 and based in Lexington, Kentucky, its mission is to promote excellence in medical care by certifying family physicians who have demonstrated the necessary education, training, skills, and professional commitment. Through its certification processes, ABFM aims to assure patients that certified physicians have the qualifications to provide high-quality care and that these standards are maintained over time. The ABFM serves as a standard-setting body for family medicine certification, addressing the needs of physicians seeking credentialing and of the patients who rely on trusted primary care providers. A recent development is the May 2025 launch of the MyABFM Mobile App, designed to simplify access to certification requirements.
