The American Civil War Museum examines the Civil War in its full complexity, focusing on its causes, course, and consequences beyond a simple artifact collection. It functions as an educational and storytelling institution, aiming to deepen public understanding of how the war shaped contemporary society. The organization operates three sites—two in Richmond (Historic Tredegar and the White House of the Confederacy) and a third in Appomattox. Formed in 2013 through the merger of the American Civil War Center and the Museum of the Confederacy, it opened a new facility in 2019 at Historic Tredegar that houses and protects its artifacts. Based in Richmond, Virginia, the museum serves the general public, educators, and researchers with an interest in Civil War history. It sits within the museums, historical sites, and zoos sector and operates as a small- to mid-sized cultural institution. Its programming and exhibits seek to illuminate the war’s causes, events, and enduring impact through educational offerings. In 2023, it partnered with Cameron Art Museum on a documentary project about the United States Colored Troops, illustrating collaborative storytelling across institutions.
