The American College of the Building Arts is a private nonprofit four-year college located in Charleston, South Carolina, that integrates professional training in the building arts with a broad liberal arts core. Its program aims to develop artisans who can design and build, understand the science and history of their craft, manage a business, and communicate effectively with clients, preparing them to lead in their trades. The college emphasizes hands-on work in preservation, restoration, or construction of architecturally significant structures, supported by experienced faculty and a focused curriculum. The school awards a BAS in Traditional Building Arts with seven concentrations: classical architecture and design, architectural stone, architectural carpentry, blacksmithing, preservation masonry, plaster, and timber framing. It is the country’s only private, nonprofit accredited four-year college offering this degree. Based in Charleston, South Carolina, the institution has recently engaged in partnerships to support its craft heritage, such as a collaboration with Greystar Real Estate Partners to incorporate handcrafted architectural elements into Charleston projects.
