AERA is a national research society dedicated to expanding knowledge about education, supporting scholarly inquiry in the field, and promoting the use of research to improve educational practice and public outcomes. Its membership comprises about 25,000 educational researchers in the United States and beyond, including university faculty, leaders in school systems, and professionals in government agencies, foundations, and the private sector. Organized around 12 Divisions, the association covers major professional domains such as administration and leadership, curriculum studies, learning and instruction, measurement and research methodology, counseling and human development, history and historiography, social context of education, research, evaluation, and assessment in schools, education in the professions, postsecondary education, teaching and teacher education, and educational policy and politics. It also hosts Special Interest Groups spanning more than 160 topics, from literacy to technology in the classroom. The organization publishes peer‑reviewed journals including Educational Researcher, American Educational Research Journal, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, and Review of Educational Research, along with an annual Review of Research in Education and several scholarly books. Based in Washington, DC, AERA operates as a mid‑sized organization serving a broad community of education researchers and related professionals. In 2025, the association introduced a new membership system, re:members, intended to support member engagement and core association operations, with an October rollout.
