The American Enterprise Institute is a Washington, DC-based public policy think tank focused on defending human dignity and expanding human potential while aiming to build a freer and safer world. Its work is framed by a belief in democracy, free enterprise, American strength, and global leadership, and it emphasizes solidarity with those at the periphery of society within a pluralistic, entrepreneurial culture. AEI operates independently of any political party and does not adopt institutional positions, with scholars conducting rigorous, data-driven research across topics such as economics, education, health care, poverty, foreign and defense studies, public opinion, politics, society, and culture.

Its audience includes policymakers, researchers, and others engaged in public policy debates who rely on analysis to inform decision-making. In 2026 AEI announced the launch of a council on artificial intelligence ethics to help ensure that technological innovation advances human dignity.
