American Farmland Trust is a United States-based nonprofit focused on preserving farmland and related soil and water resources. Founded in 1980 by farmers, conservationists, and supporters including Peggy McGrath Rockefeller, the organization began by promoting conservation easements to keep high-value farmland from development. Over more than four decades, it has helped protect well over five million acres nationwide and advocates for voluntary conservation practices that sustain land, water, and farming communities. Its work centers on keeping working lands in production and supporting the people who farm them, recognizing that family farmers and ranchers form the core of the nation’s food system. In June 2026, American Farmland Trust launched a podcast examining the challenges farmers and ranchers face when transitioning land between generations.
