The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is a non-profit organization in the earth and space sciences sector based in Washington, D.C., at 2000 Florida Avenue NW, 20009. It supports a global community of more than half a million advocates and professionals and employs between 201 and 500 people. AGU provides programs that include scholarly publishing, convening virtual and in-person events, and career support, with the aim of advancing discovery and solution science that is ethical, unbiased, and respectful of communities and their values. The organization operates initiatives such as a net-zero-energy renovated building and an Ethics and Equity Center to foster a diverse and inclusive geoscience community and responsible conduct. Founded in 1919 by the National Research Council, AGU operated as an unincorporated affiliate of the National Academy of Sciences for over 50 years and was independently incorporated in 1972. It hosts and participates in events and collaborations, including upcoming AGU26 in San Francisco on December 7–11, 2026.
