The American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Bozeman, Montana, operating as a 501(c)(3) educational organization. It represents the interests of local independent businesses and supports local economic development, with a small staff of 2-10 employees and a focus on nurturing local entrepreneurship and citizen engagement. AMIBA assists communities in launching and managing buy local campaigns, and facilitates group purchasing and marketing among local businesses, along with other programs to support community enterprise. The organization notes that communities form Independent Business Alliances to strengthen locally owned businesses and to prevent chains and remotely controlled businesses from displacing locals. AMIBA defines a local independent business as privately, employee-, community-, or cooperatively owned, with at least 50% owned by area residents, where local owners hold full decision-making authority, and with a limited number and geographic range of locations; it was incorporated in 2001 by Jeff Milchen and Jennifer Rockne, who previously led the Boulder Independent Business Alliance, and is governed by a board of present or past leaders of local IBAs.
