Founded in 1947 as part of the National Academy of Sciences and later becoming an independent, member-governed organization, it is based in Herndon, Virginia. The institute serves more than 100 member organizations and advances its work by publishing the peer-reviewed journal BioScience and by providing peer-review and advisory services to research funding programs. AIBS collaborates with scientific organizations to advance public policy, education, and the public understanding of science. In 2023 it received a National Science Foundation workshop grant to support discussions on enabling interdisciplinary and collaborative science through the integration of biological and environmental data.
