The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is a nonpartisan, voluntary membership organization for state legislators based in Arlington, Virginia. Founded in 1973, it promotes the principles of limited government, free markets and federalism. Its membership comprises about a quarter of the nation’s state legislators and includes stakeholders from across the policy spectrum, collectively representing more than 60 million Americans and underpinning more than 30 million jobs. It operates within the public policy arena, bridging lawmakers and broader policy interests to address issues consistent with its core principles. A notable development in 2025 was the expansion of its offices in Texas to broaden its policy work.
