ASME operates as the principal professional body for editors overseeing magazines and digital outlets in the United States. Founded in 1963 and based in Astoria, New York, the organization aims to defend First Amendment freedoms, support newsroom development, and uphold editorial integrity across print and online publications. It pursues these aims through a program of awards, training, and published guidelines for editors and publishers.

ASME administers the National Magazine Awards in association with the Columbia Journalism School and offers training programs for reporters and editors. It also publishes the ASME Guidelines for Editors and Publishers. Recent activity demonstrates ongoing engagement with the industry, such as participation in the ASME Awards events in 2026.
