ASMI is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit sports medicine research and education foundation based at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, founded in 1987 by Dr. James R. Andrews. Its mission is to improve understanding, prevention, and treatment of sports-related injuries through research and education. The institute includes facilities such as a biomechanics laboratory, a sports medicine library, and a skills lab for arthroscopic training and cadaveric research, and it is the nation's largest accredited educator of sports medicine physicians, with graduates in 44 states, Puerto Rico, and ten foreign countries. Its activities include providing advanced training through fellowships, conducting biomechanical and clinical research, and working with athletic teams from youth leagues through professional levels. A recent development is a partnership with Major League Baseball to host the ASMI-MLB Baseball Medicine Workshop in Birmingham.
