Based in Los Angeles, the American Youth Symphony operates as a competitive youth orchestra that brings together around 100 musicians from diverse backgrounds. It provides landmark fellowships to virtuosic young adults and presents innovative, free concerts for the local community. Through performances at world-class venues, the organization aims to broaden access to classical music and nurture the next generation of performers and audiences.

The ensemble serves aspiring players who receive fellowships and the broader Los Angeles audience who benefit from complimentary concerts, reflecting the group’s focus on access and opportunity. In May 2023, Isabel Thiroux was named executive director, reflecting ongoing leadership development within a small staff.
