Amigos de Los Rios is a California-based nonprofit focused on building a connected greenspace network in the Los Angeles Basin, known as the Emerald Necklace. Its work encompasses protecting the forests and mountains of upper watersheds, safeguarding the Pacific coastline, and creating green schools and expansive urban river greenways to broaden equitable access to nature. The Emerald Necklace concept is grounded in a contemporary interpretation of the 1929 Olmsted Bartholomew LA Basin Plan, with habitat restoration informed by traditional ecological knowledge of the watershed. Since 2003, the organization has collaborated with community leaders, public agencies, and a volunteer network of youth leaders to plan and implement this multi-objective greenspace network for Los Angeles.
