Quality Management (QM) is an important function of any anesthesia practice. Individual clinicians have a professional obligation to think about the patient care they provide and attempt to improve it. Through this need for improvement the Anesthesia Quality Institute was created in 2009 as an affiliated organization of the ASA for the purpose of 1) organizing the quality management, patient safety, and comparative effectiveness efforts of the society, and 2) creating a national registry of anesthesia cases and outcomes. AQI is dedicated to continuously improving the quality care in anesthesia. Through these efforts a number of programs have been developed to promote the needed change in the quality of care for patients in anesthesia. The AQI was established by ASA to facilitate practice-based quality management. As the largest anesthesia registry in the country, AQI's vision is "to be the primary source of information for quality improvement in the clinical practice of anesthesiology. Through education and quality data feedback AQI will improve the care of patients, speed the response to critical incidents and reduce anesthesia-related morbidity and mortality." The AQI currently maintains 7 registries. AQI's mission is to "maintain these ongoing registries with case data as the primary resource for anesthesiologists looking to assess and improve patient care. These registries will be organized so that anesthesiology practice groups can easily submit case information and so that individual anesthesiologists, practice groups, researchers, and professional societies will find the data useful to improve the quality of care."
