Founded in 1946, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is a small nonprofit organization based in Alexandria, Virginia, that serves as a shelter for homeless animals and as a community resource. It provides adoptions, spay and neuter assistance, education, and outreach to promote responsible pet care across Northern Virginia. Since 1989 it has contracted with the City of Alexandria to provide animal care, control and sheltering services, and it operates the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter as an open-admission facility that accepts any animals brought to it. The League emphasizes care for animals in need as a central element of its work. In 2023 it expanded outreach with the launch of the Alexandria Animal Academy, a program focused on dog training to support stronger owner-pet relationships. It has pursued collaborations with local partners to broaden access to animal services in the community.
