Based in Middletown, Rhode Island, the Aquidneck Island Land Trust is a nonprofit environmental services organization focused on preserving open spaces and maintaining the island’s natural character for the community’s long-term benefit. Founded in 1990, ALT advances conservation, environmental health, and agricultural heritage through easements and stewardship, beginning with its first conservation easement in 1993 on the historic Slocum estate in Newport. The trust has conserved more than 2,500 acres and operates 11 miles of publicly accessible trails, including the Sakonnet Greenway Trail and routes in Portsmouth and Middletown, managed with the support of a small full-time staff.

ALT is governed by more than 20 trustees and advisory board members with expertise across law, agriculture, finance, real estate, environmental protection, business, and land conservation. It earned national accreditation in 2009, becoming the first land trust in Rhode Island to achieve that status. In 2025, ALT launched a climate resilience program and held an Earth Day event on April 22 to advance resilience planning for Aquidneck Island, alongside ongoing community engagement and education initiatives such as an annual art and writing contest for local students.
