Archbishop Hoban High School is a private, Catholic, college-prep high school in Akron, Ohio. It is a part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. In the early 1950s, Archbishop Edward F. Hoban invited the Brothers of Holy Cross to staff a new high school to be named in his honor. The Brothers had taught him as a boy, and he knew their standard of excellence. Hoban's mission statement reminds us that we are a Catholic high school in the Holy Cross tradition. This describes both who we are and what we do. The Holy Cross tradition is a balanced, integrated, holistic approach to education where knowledge and faith converge. More specifically, it has three key aspects: Information that imparts to students knowledge and competence, which is at the service of ... Formation of the student by fostering proper values, attitudes and behaviors, which is directed toward ... Transformation of the person, who becomes an agent of transformation in the world. In other words, Holy Cross education is both instructional and formative. It is directed toward the transformation of the person, the community and the world. For over a half century, the students and alumni of Hoban have ended their Alma Mater with the words “we shall be true to you.” It is, of course, a statement of undying faithfulness to their school as well as to the generations of students who accomplished so much during their years as a Hoban Knight. Being true to you is also a statement of mission and philosophy that permeates all that happens at this beloved school.
