But when children are exposed to chronic, toxic stressors such as abuse or neglect, the effects can be like constructing a building on a shaky foundation: these experiences can have negative, long-lasting health consequences. Preventing abuse and intervening early and effectively when abuse does occur are two important ways we can help children maintain or regain the stable foundation they need.
