In 1965 quality professional theatre for the people of Tucson was just a dream. In 1966 that dream became a reality when Arizona Theatre Company, founded as Arizona Civic Theatre, began performing short plays in the basement of Tucson’s Santa Rita Hotel. Since then a number of things have changed. 49 years after being just a dream, Arizona Theatre Company is now the largest arts organization in the state, performing its season in two cities to an audience of over 200,000 people each year. ATC has received presidential citations and nationwide recognition for its two-city operation and in 1990 was designated the State Theatre of Arizona.
