ARNOVA is a Madison, Wisconsin based association in the civic and social sector that connects scholars, teachers, and practice leaders who study nonprofit organizations, voluntary action, philanthropy, and civil society. Founded in 1971 as the Association of Voluntary Action Scholars, the organization functions as a neutral, open forum dedicated to strengthening research and shaping practical work in these fields. It brings together theoretical and applied perspectives, helping researchers gain insight into the day-to-day concerns of third-sector groups while providing nonprofit professionals with access to research they can apply to their work and to broader community well-being. As a small to mid-sized association, ARNOVA serves a national and international audience seeking to advance both research and practice in the sector. In December 2025, ARNOVA partnered with Independent Sector and GrantStation to host the 14th Symposium on Public Policy for Nonprofits, an event focused on how nonprofits can communicate, advance, and protect their impact. That collaboration highlights ARNOVA's ongoing role in fostering dialogue among scholars, practitioners, and policymakers around nonprofit policy and practice.
