The Artisanal Gold Council is a not-for-profit organization based in Victoria, British Columbia, focused on artisanal and small-scale gold mining in the developing world. It seeks to improve opportunities, environmental conditions, and health for the millions involved in ASGM, aiming to contribute to better overall practices in the global gold sector. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining represents a major economic activity in more than 70 countries and supports the livelihoods of over 100 million people. The council collaborates with communities and other stakeholders in developing countries to address social, environmental, and health-related challenges linked to ASGM. Notable initiatives include starting the Sustainable Development of ASGM program in Indonesia in 2015 and a project launched in 2020 to reduce mercury use in Papua New Guinea's ASGM sector. In 2023, leadership changes included Roger Tissot becoming executive director, with founder Kevin Telmer moving to a role focusing on innovation and business development, and later that year Douglas Kao was named global operations manager.
