Who We Are Artium Technologies specializes in high-precision laser diagnostics that help engineers and scientists understand how droplets, particles, and complex flows behave in real time. Founded in 1998 by Dr. William Bachalo and the team behind the original Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA), we continue to set the standard for spray and particle measurement. Our Heritage of Innovation Artium’s technology has been shaped by SBIR support from NASA, EPA, and NIST. These programs advanced Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) and led to the commercial LII-200 soot analyzer used worldwide in emissions and combustion research. Artium's Contribution Beyond Industry One of Artium's most meaningful partnerships was with Islet Technology (Minnesota), focused on developing islet encapsulation solutions for diabetes treatment. Using Artium’s particle and droplet measurement expertise, the collaboration aimed to improve micro-encapsulation processes that protect insulin-producing cells, a promising step toward advanced diabetes therapies. This project highlights Artium’s ability to apply its scientific tools beyond industry, contributing to medical and health related innovation. What We Build We design powerful but easy to use instruments, including Phase Doppler Interferometry (PDI) systems for spray and droplet characterization, airborne PDI Cloud Probes for atmospheric and icing research, and LII instruments for real-time soot and particulate measurement. Our Expertise • Phase Doppler Interferometry (PDI) • Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) • Spray & Droplet Characterization • Particle Sizing • Laser Diagnostics • Cloud & Atmospheric Measurement Who We Serve Aerospace, combustion, atmospheric science, pharmaceuticals, environmental research, consumer product developers, and any industry where understanding droplets and particles drives safety, performance, and innovation.
