The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) functions as a national advocacy body representing First Nations individuals and communities across Canada on issues of national or international importance. It is based in Ottawa, Ontario and operates within the government administration sphere, engaging with policymakers to advance the interests of its member communities. AFN conducts its work through two biannual Assemblies where elected Chiefs (or proxies) establish mandates via resolutions. Governance is led by an Executive Committee headed by a National Chief and Regional Chiefs, with guidance from five national councils representing Knowledge Keepers, Youth, Veterans, 2SLGBTQQIA+, and Women. Recent developments include AFN activity at national forums and a expansion of its reach, including facilities expansion into Australia and Oceania in 2026.
