The 80+ members of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) advocate for independent nonprofit higher education. Our schools educate 279,000 students annually, and support the largest segment of four-year degree-seeking students in our state. We affordably educate the largest segment of lower-income learners in Pennsylvania (46% of all Pell Grant recipients in PA). The affordability of our degrees and economic mobility of our graduates has been recognized in recent rankings by The Wall Street Journal, Washington Monthly, and the Third Way think tank. We offer students the best on-time graduation rates, the best opportunities, and the lowest debt ratios of any comparable higher ed sector in our region. The AICUP schools collectively add $29 billion annually to the Pennsylvania economy, and $65 billion when combined with our affiliated hospitals, an amount that is equivalent to nearly 7% of the state economy. These schools pay over $1.5 billion in state and local taxes every year that supports local communities.
