Its work centers on engineering and design for space habitats and on activities that educate the public and inform policy. The organization brings together researchers, educators, and policymakers to advance space-related exploration and infrastructure.

Based in Cambridge, the institute has conducted work at venues such as the Autodesk Technology Center in Boston toward developing human-scale space habitat prototypes. A recent development is a partnership with Heatherwick Studio announced in August 2025, under which the Space Garden project was unveiled for the Venice Architecture Biennale.
