Insights

Expanding Research Hubs Australian Research Council actively partners with various entities to establish research hubs, such as the recent launch of the ARC Research Hub for advanced manufacturing and functional sustainable fibres. These partnerships indicate a keen interest in advancing research capabilities and present opportunities for collaboration with technology providers and research institutions.

Strategic Funding Allocation The ARC's investments in universities, as seen with the $1.13M awarded to the University of Newcastle for Discovery Project grants, highlight a strategic focus on funding innovative research projects. This presents opportunities for vendors of research equipment and services to engage with the ARC and participating universities.

Key Executive Appointments Appointments of high-level executives like Professor Alastair McEwan and Professor Gavin Reid in specific research areas demonstrate a commitment to enhancing research expertise within the ARC. Building relationships with these key personnel could open doors for solution providers catering to their respective research domains.

Utilization of Evaluation Frameworks The ARC's utilization of evaluation frameworks such as Excellence in Research for Australia and Engagement and Impact reflects a strong emphasis on assessing research quality and engagement. Vendors offering data analytics and impact measurement tools can position themselves to support ARC-funded projects based on these evaluation criteria.

Collaboration with Research Institutes Collaborations with institutes like the Research on Research Institute showcase the ARC's engagement in broader research ecosystems. For businesses specializing in research methodologies, this presents opportunities to offer expertise in enhancing research systems and decision-making processes within the ARC and its network.

The Australian Research Council (ARC) is a Commonwealth entity established as an independent body under the Australian Research Council Act 2001, reporting to the Australian Government Minister for Education and Youth.

The ARC administers the National Competitive Grants Program (NCGP), a significant component of Australia's investment in research and development, provides advice to the Minister on matters related to research, and assesses the quality, engagement and impact of university research.

The National Competitive Grants Program (NCGP) comprises 13 schemes under two key programs, the Discovery Program and Linkage Program.

Under the NCGP, the ARC funds the highest-quality fundamental and applied research and research training to eligible organisations (mainly Australian universities) in all fields across the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines, as well as the humanities, arts and social sciences.

The ARC administers 2 evaluation frameworks to assess the quality, engagement and impact of research — Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) and Engagement and Impact (EI).

ERA provides a comprehensive evaluation of the quality of research produced by Australian universities against international benchmarks.

EI assesses engagement of researchers with research end-users and shows how universities are translating their research into economic, social, environmental, cultural and other impacts.
