SR1™ — End-to-End Royalty & Business Management Platform for Independent Music

Backlash Solutions was a pioneering music-technology company delivering one of the industry’s first online royalty accounting and business-management platforms for independent record labels, distributors, and publishers.

Originally conceived in 1999 by Dave Tomaselli through his work as Co-Founder of Statra Recordings—the system was developed as an internal solution to manage the full lifecycle of an independent music business. The platform was named SR1 (Statra Recordings One) and designed to unify royalty accounting, financial reporting, artist statements, catalog management, and operational workflows into a single system.

Between 2002–2003, SR1 was offered as a client-server application to independent labels in the New York City market. By 2005, through the formation of Backlash Solutions, SR1 was transitioned online and launched as one of the earliest SaaS-based, end-to-end business platforms built specifically for the independent music sector.

From 2005–2012, Backlash Solutions served a global client base of record labels, music distributors, and publishers—providing a cost-effective, scalable alternative to legacy enterprise systems. The platform tracked the complete business process from deal setup through royalty calculation, accounting, and reporting, helping independent companies operate with institutional-grade financial clarity.

Notably, many clients continue to operate on a system architecture and workflow model that remains largely unchanged from its early-2000s design—underscoring the durability and foresight of the original platform.

Backlash Solutions and the SR1 platform were acquired in January 2020 by Exactuals, a subsidiary of RBC City National Bank.
