Bahir Dar University is a major Ethiopian higher education and research institution located in Bahir Dar, on the shores of Lake Tana and the Blue Nile. It was formed in 2000 through the merger of Bahir Dar Polytechnic (established 1963) and Bahir Dar Teachers' College (established 1972). The university serves more than 40,000 students across about 340 programs, supported by a sizable academic and administrative staff across its campuses. It operates as a research-oriented institution with a distributed footprint that comprises five colleges, two faculties, four institutes, two schools, two academies and nine campuses. Its mission emphasizes contributing to the nation and beyond through high-quality education, research and community services, with a stated aim to be among Africa's top ten research universities by 2025. The university hosts 12 research centers, including Centers of Excellence in areas such as teacher education and leadership studies, textile engineering, land administration, maritime studies, and disaster risk management and food security.
