Los orígenes de Banco Santa Fe se remontan al Banco Provincial de Santa Fe. Considerado el "banco de los santafesinos" fue, desde sus comienzos, patrimonio y orgullo de los habitantes de la provincia.

Las primeras gestiones para la creación de un banco provincial se iniciaron en 1863, como resultantes del progreso del país y de la provincia, y de la necesidad de vincular su economía al trabajo y la producción, ordenando y dirigiendo el crédito que estimulara la actividad. 	

Diversas circunstancias adversas frustraron los intentos de concreción de este proyecto, hasta que en 1872 fue sancionada la ley que, autorizando la concertación del nuevo empréstito, permitió reunir los fondos iniciales del capital bancario. Pero recién el 5 de junio de 1874, y por iniciativa del gobernador Servando Bayo, se realizó la primera reunión constitutiva en la que se designaron, por votación, los cuatro proponentes que integrarían el Directorio Provisional: Carlos Casado, Benjamín Ledesma, Manuel Carlés y Evaristo Machain. Por parte del gobierno, los representantes fueron Melitón Ibarlucea y Mariano Alvarado. El capital de la entidad se compuso de dos millones de pesos fuertes, distribuidos en veinte mil acciones, de las cuales diez mil subscribió el gobierno provincial, cuatro mil los proponentes y seis mil se libraron a la suscripción pública de los comerciantes rosarinos.
