Η Τράπεζα της Ελλάδος είναι η κεντρική τράπεζα της χώρας. Αποτελεί ανεξάρτητη αρχή που ασκεί δημόσιο λειτούργημα: μεριμνά για τη σταθερότητα των τιμών και για τη σταθερότητα και την εύρυθμη λειτουργία του χρηματοπιστωτικού συστήματος.
Παραμένοντας θεσμικά και λειτουργικά ανεξάρτητη, υπόκειται στο δημοκρατικό έλεγχο της Βουλής.
Η Τράπεζα της Ελλάδος αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο μέλος του Ευρωσυστήματος και συμμετέχει με τις υπόλοιπες εθνικές κεντρικές τράπεζες της Ευρωζώνης και την Ευρωπαϊκή Κεντρική Τράπεζα στη χάραξη της ενιαίας νομισματικής πολιτικής επί του κοινού νομίσματος.
Υπό μία έννοια, η Τράπεζα της Ελλάδος είναι η τράπεζα των τραπεζών, δηλαδή δέχεται καταθέσεις από τις εμπορικές τράπεζες που δραστηριοποιούνται στη χώρα και δανείζει χρήματα σ’ αυτές.

The Bank of Greece is the central bank of the country. It is an independent authority exercising a public function: it pursues price stability and the stability and smooth operation of the financial system.
While remaining institutionally and operationally independent, it is subject to democratic control by Parliament.
The Bank of Greece is an integral part of the Eurosystem and, together with the other national central banks of the euro area and the European Central Bank, participates in the formulation of the single monetary policy for the euro area.
In a sense, the Bank of Greece is the banker of banks, i.e. it accepts deposits from and lends to commercial banks operating in the country.
