Banque du Liban (BDL) is the central bank of Lebanon, based in Beirut and employing between 201 and 500 people. By law, BDL holds the exclusive right to issue the national currency and its mandate includes safeguarding monetary and economic stability and the soundness of the banking sector. BDL's remit covers the development and regulation of money and financial markets, payment systems and instruments, money transfer operations including electronic transfers, and clearing and settlement operations for financial instruments and marketable bonds. In recent years, the institution has overseen currency and financial system initiatives, including the issuance of new banknotes in 2023 and the Sayrafa electronic platform for currency exchange launched in 2020, along with published macroeconomic reviews. In addition, BDL has engaged external firms for forensic audits covering periods from 2019 onward to support reforms in the financial sector.
